11 Ways To Channel The Energy Of The Winter Solstice (Yes, That Is Today)

Take a minute to reflect and renew in this (very short) moment of calm before the whirlwind end of 2016.

Today, December 21, marks the Winter Solstice. For Americans, this day indicates the official start of winter, and also holds the dubious honor of being the shortest day of the year. For many others in different locales and cultures, the Winter Solstice is a time to reflect on the past year and to focus on new beginnings, a time to release old patterns and to rekindle hope, a time to welcome the light whilst embracing the dark.

And so, because we are Kale.Life, and because we are about all the good stuff, we don’t we all take a moment to use the shortest day of the year as an opportunity to look inwards? Here, a few (ok, 11) ways to do just that.

1. Relax and reflect on the projects you have worked on throughout the year. Did you achieve what you set out to do when you made your resolutions in January?

2. The darkness is a natural opportunity to be quiet: Listen to the quiet voice within us that calls for us to live a congruent and authentic life.

3. Let go of the past and make way for the new. The Winter Solstice is a major Yin energy time when the spirit is receptive to change and giving birth to new ideas and habits.

4. Use the shortness of today to meditate and fast. Allow only good thoughts.

5. Kick off a (very) short detox before the indulgences of the holiday period (fully) descend.

6. Connect with nature. Food for wildlife is sparse during the winter months; how about feeding those garden birds and squirrels?

7. Use the long hours of darkness to get quality sleep. Press the reset button and rest.

8. Create a vision of your best self and write it down. Positive affirmation changes the brain, and makes you more likely to spot great opportunities and take advantage.

9. Take advantage of the clear, crisp evening: Grab a blanket and stargaze.

10. Write down your dreams, and all the ways you will commit to fulfilling them. Starting today, do something each week until you have achieved them.

11. Say thank you to those people who have supported, motivated and inspired you during the past year. Write them a letter expressing that gratitude.
