Vitamix, A Love Story: Four Ways To Use A High-Powered Blender

Getting your hands on the right blender is nothing short of life-changing. Here, four ways I’m blending (and staying healthy, naturally) at home.

I never really knew I wanted a Vitamix until I got one. I’d read the praises and seen the infomercials, all those people whizzing up their smoothies, but I was not sold—and not ready to take that financial plunge. Vitamix, if you’re unfamiliar, is a popular brand that makes the best high powered blender. Said blenders come with a somewhat steep price tag (some models are close to $700!), but they are built to last a long time and come with a pretty great warranty (up to seven years!).

Luckily, I found a black Vitamin 5300 under my tree one Christmas, a gift from my insanely generous bosses who knew my love of all things kitchen. I was pretty thrilled to get my hands on one of these things, and have since made hundreds of concoctions in it. Here, the secrets behind four of my go-tos.

(Note: If you don’t have a Vitamix, another high powered blender should do just fine. Another option is purchasing a Certified Reconditioned Vitamix blender for a fraction of the cost of abrand new one.)

1. Smoothies and shakes I’ve used chunky, clunky and cheap blenders in the past that could barely blend ice. My Vitamix, on the other hand, can whip up any number of smoothies in seconds. My current favorite is this morning protein shake: A small handful of ice, half a banana for creaminess, a cup or two of almond milk, and a couple spoonfuls of Rootz Protein Powder.

2. Nut butters My spoon never leaves the jar of almond butter once it is open, so, in the interest of being a bit more economical, I like to have the option of making my own. Soak some raw nuts in water for a couple hours, drain, then blend. Once blended, add cinnamon, pumpkin spice, vanilla, etcetera for a bit of flavor. You may need to remove top and use a spatula to help get things moving (make sure blender is off!). My Vitamix is also great for making coconut butter: Just fill with a few cups of shredded raw coconut, and watch it magically turn into a thick, fatty, rich coconut butter.

3. Soups Like creamy soups? (I know, who doesn’t.) I love them, but I don’t always like to add a ton of cream. One of my favorite ways to make a soup creamy without actual cream is to puree some roasted or steamed veggies (cauliflower, sweet potatoes, squash, peppers) with broth or coconut milk. (Here’s how to make a creamy cauliflower soup base.) I’ll then add in some (non-blended) veggies and protein to finish it off.

4. Blended drinks Into the butter coffee thing? Drinking your MCT oil daily in your cup of joe? I’ll mix anything I’m adding to my coffee —maca powder, coconut oil, or collagen protein —by dumping it into my Vitamin to ensure an amazing frothy foam top. Doing this ensures that the oil or butter isn’t left sitting on the top of my drink.

Final thing worth noting? These high powered blenders are actually surprisingly easy to clean up. Just fill with a little water, a drizzle of dish soap, put the lid on, and blend. This suds it up, cleans off the walls, then you just have to dump, rinse, and let dry.
