Eat, Drink And Be Healthy: Five Ways To Prevent A Hangover

Enjoy yourself the night of that party—and the morning after, too.

When the drinks are flowing (and ‘aflowing they are this time of year!), it can be hard to stick to your healthy way of eating. But, contrary to popular belief, there IS a way to enjoy a cocktail or two, and still be healthy about it (which will help prevent a hangover). Here’s how.

Eat a big meal beforehand. Not junk food. Try some lean protein and veggies with a liberal dose of healthy fats from oils.

Go drink-for-drink with H20. Have a glass of water for each alcoholic drink you consume, this will ensure that you’re hydrated and avoid the raging headache in the morning.

Choose your beverages wisely. Beer, dark wine and many mixers (juice, soft drinks) are high in calories and sugar (not great for the ol’ waistline), and full of preservatives that have a negative effect on your central nervous system (not great if you are looking to prevent a hangover). If these are your FAVORITE alcoholic beverages, no worries: Just enjoy in moderation, as with all indulgences.

The clear stuff is the best stuff. Low in sugar and preservatives, clear spirits are the MVPs of a holiday party. Add a dash of soda and a squeeze of lime, and you have your ideal go-to drink for those parties.

Rethink your favorite cocktail. With a bit of modification, even the most sugary of cocktails can be made into healthy versions of themselves. Here, two to try. (A word of warning, however: Be sure not to over-indulge: These are extremely delicious.)

  • CosmopolitanMix the juice of 1 lime wedge with a splash of cranberry juice, a splash of club soda and a single shot of citrus-flavored vodka for a low-sugar version of the storied cocktail.
  • Mojito: Crush lime wedges, lime juice and mint leaves crushed together into a paste along with 2 ounces of rum, 4 ounces of club soda and ½ teaspoon of warmed honey.
